A note from the CCBSA Conference Chair, Angela Calvillo, Clerk of the Board, City and County of San Francisco

Welcome from the host City of San Francisco where the 35th ANNIVERSARY OF THE CCBSA CONFERENCE IS ABOUT TO COMMENCE!

Registration is now open for the 2019 CCBSA Annual Meeting, scheduled for December 3 - 6 in the City and County of San Francisco. This year we celebrate the 35th anniversary of the California Clerk of the Board of Supervisors Association. The CCBSA organization unites us Clerk’s and ensures we have a forum to communicate with each other, and uphold our standards together.  In honor of this, our meeting theme is Safeguarding our Standards Together. The Clerk of the Board is the doorway to local government; the treasures of service provided by our offices are what connect our residents to local government and keeps the public engaged. A post-truth political environment has a destructive force on the public trust, and the Clerk’s ethos of accuracy and impartiality is the antidote to hugger-muggery.

As the current Conference Chair, I send you greetings as you make preparations to attend. There will be something for everyone, no matter where you are in your professional career. It will be the perfect time to restock your supplies to receive Clerk’s practical wisdom and well-timed camaraderie.  We built in plenty of time for relationship and partnership strengthening, and for sharing resources to connect California’s counties and improve our communities through our profound role that is the Clerk’s business.

Please review the schedule and learn what knowledge, skills or ability you will take home to your County.

We are excited for you to join us, but first, I want to thank my colleague Eileen McHugh for her incredible collaboration on this entire Conference.  Without Eileen’s best millennial thinking and well placed effort, we would have disappointed you!  If you need further information to convince your County to allow your attendance, please do not hesitate to contact either Eileen McHugh or myself.

Tuesday, December 3, 2019

  • Americans With Disabilities Act Presentation: You will learn to ensure your meetings and communications are ADA compliant, and be provided suggested best practices from the Director of the Mayor’s Office on Disabilities.

Wednesday, December 4, 2019

  • Effective Presentations Part I: Practice Makes Perfect: Learn techniques for formal presentations to any audience, regarding a project or about yourself.
  • B.A.N.K. – (Blueprint, Action, Nurturing, Knowledge): A clash of personalities is bad for the people’s business. It is possible to understand and get along with other people’s personality types and learn strategies for managing relationships, individuals and teams to influence important decisions to be determined in your favor.

Thursday, December 5, 2019

  • Crisis Management in the Clerks Office: When an office mistake strikes, mitigate the problem with capable messaging and reignite confidence in your approach; and prepare yourself for hostile audiences and aggressive questions.
  • Effective Presentations Part II: Put the techniques learned from the Effective Presentations into practice, record your session and receive feedback, specific to a project or about yourself.

A tour of San Francisco on a Cable Car is planned for Tuesday, December 3, 2019. If you would like to join us, please RSVP to my assistant Eileen McHugh at 415-554-7703 or [email protected] by November 1, 2019.  Space is limited, first come first served.

PLEASE NOTE: Unfortunately, due to our dinner being on a yacht, there are no elevators. They will allow early boarding to those individuals in need of a little more time to board.

Conference Details

The team from the Clerk of the Board’s Office in the City and County of San Francisco, in consultation with the CCBSA Conference Planning Committee, are working hard to create a fantastic conference with leadership seminars, workshops that tackle topical issues, and some really, really FUN networking opportunities! We will be collectively celebrating the 35th anniversary of the CCBSA and the 30th anniversary of the Clerks’ Quiz.

Quick note regarding the Networking & Conference Welcome Dinner on Wednesday, December 4, 2019 – if you are not registering for this event through your CSAC registration, please be sure to RSVP by e-mailing Eileen McHugh at [email protected]. Given that it is CCBSA’s 35th anniversary, San Francisco is hosting the Welcome Dinner and celebration aboard the Hornblower Cruise Yacht. A guaranteed guest count must be made one month prior to sailing. Therefore, please be sure to register for the conference well in advance, or at the latest by Friday, November 1, 2019, in order to save your seat on the Bay cruise.

In addition to the upcoming CCBSA Conference, we want to remind members that the California Association of Clerks and Election Officials (CACEO) is holding it’s annual New Laws Conference for Clerks of the Board on Monday, December 2, 2019 in Sacramento. More information will be provided soon by CACEO to members. This is a valuable conference that provides detailed information about the legislative changes that impact Clerks of the Board. While both conferences are back to back, the physical proximity of the CACEO New Laws Conference and CCBSA Annual Conference may provide an opportunity for you to attend both conferences! Some clerks are getting together to carpool from Sacramento to San Francisco on Monday afternoon. Who doesn’t love a good road trip?!

Speaking of road trips, on Tuesday, December 3, 2019, in San Francisco, the Clerk’s Office is planning a two-hour tour of San Francisco on Cable Cars (without a motor or an engine, that is pulled along the streets by large cables). If you wish to attend, please RSVP for the conference well in advance, or at the latest by Friday, November 1, 2019, in order to save your seat, otherwise seating cannot be guaranteed.

The CCBSA Conference Planning Committee looks forward to seeing you in San Francisco this December!
